Nickel–copper alloy for hydrofluoric acid, seawater and hot concentrated alkali.
Monel 400 is a nickel–copper alloy that resists hydrofluoric acid and fluorine-bearing media better than almost anything else, and it handles seawater, neutral salts and hot concentrated caustic with equal ease. It does not suffer chloride stress-corrosion cracking, which makes it dependable in marine and chemical environments.
It is also strong and tough at low temperature, and machines cleanly — useful for pump shafts, valve trim and fasteners as well as for piping components.
ASTM B564, B164 (bar), B165 (pipe), B127 (plate)
The default alloy for mixed acids, chlorides and wet chlorine — and the grade most often specified when no one is sure what the stream will do.
Alloy detailChromium-rich cousins of C-276: better in oxidising media and in wet chlorine, with C-4 for hot ductility.
Alloy detailNickel–molybdenum alloys for hydrochloric acid — any concentration, any temperature within the practical range.
